PLEXOS Solutions Announces Agreement with Southern Company Generation

SACRAMENTO, California – PLEXOS Solutions has signed an agreement with Southern Company Generation to provide resource planning and portfolio analysis solutions. Southern Company Generation is the business unit of Southern Company that oversees both retail and wholesale generation and generation services. Southern Company Generation operates more than 290 electricity generating units in 72 fossil and hydro power plants located across the Southeast.
Southern Company Generation required a robust solution that produces accurate production cost and market simulations based on optimal unit commitment and dispatch. In addition, Southern Company Generation need to analyze alternative resource, fuel, and load portfolios to develop cost-effective planning and hedging strategies.
“Southern Company Generation required a tool that would not only provide them with a least-cost unit commitment and dispatch model, they also needed the output to reflect all market opportunities available in energy, fuel, emissions and associated markets,” according to Eric Toolson, PLEXOS Solutions LLC CEO. “PLEXOS solves the simultaneous optimization problem using an advanced Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) algorithm, instead of the sequential, heuristic approach used by many models.”
