PLEXOS Solutions Announces WECC Database

Sacramento, California - PLEXOS Solutions has released its comprehensive database of WECC transmission, generation, load, and fuel data. The database works with PLEXOS for Power Systems to forecast zonal and nodal (LMP) energy prices, evaluate transmission economic feasibility, and analyze the value for Congestion-Revenue-Rights (CRRs). The database was developed from many sources including regional reliability council, federal, state, utility, and in-house information and has undergone extensive testing by the company and its customers. The database is available for license by WECC members.

“The PLEXOS WECC Database is unique in that it contains market power information required to correctly implement an advanced dynamic energy-bidding methodology. It also contains ownership information of system elements so that the economics in a transmission feasibility study can be computed automatically” according to Eric Toolson PLEXOS Solutions CEO. “In addition, the PLEXOS WECC Database can be used to forecast ancillary service prices including regulation-up, regulation-down, spin, and non-spin”.

The PLEXOS WECC Database also has the option of modeling a “California equivalent system” where California is modeled in great detail (to the 115 kV level) and the rest of WECC is aggregated to correctly capture the impacts of hydro, fuel, and load uncertainty. This level of analysis is valuable for transaction evaluation and congestion revenue right valuation.

PLEXOS Solutions has recently used its WECC database for a multiple-year forecast of zonal and nodal energy prices as well as ancillary reserves for a WECC utility. PLEXOS Solutions expects to use the PLEXOS WECC Database extensively in its own consulting and studies and to make it available to PLEXOS clients on an annual licensing basis
